Recommendations for two city council races in Edmonds and Mountlake Terrace conclude the editorial board’s endorsements for the Aug. 5 primary election. A summary of the board’s endorsements for the primary will be published Saturday in The Weekend Herald and will be available online Friday at HeraldNet.com/opinion.
The decision by current city council member Neil Tibbot not to seek reelection opened the race to three first-time candidates: Alex Newman, Joseph Ademofe and Erika Barnett. The top two candidates from the primary will move on to the Nov. 4 general election, joining two other city council races and a request to Edmonds voters to approve a $14.5 million property tax levy lid lift.
Three newcomers are vying for a vacant seat on Edmonds City Council amid the city’s continuing fiscal crisis.
Security guard Joseph Ademofe, small-business owner Erika Barnett and nonprofit executive Alex Newman are eyeing Position 3 on the council.
The Aug. 5 primary election includes three candidates running for Edmonds City Council Position 3. To help voters learn more, My Edmonds News sent a questionnaire to each candidate appearing on the primary ballot.
We will post these as we receive them.
Council Position 3 is currently held by Neil Tibbott, who is not running for reelection. There are three candidates for the position: Joseph Ademofe, Erika Barnett and Alex Newman. The two top vote-getters from the Aug. 5 primary will advance to the Nov. 4 general election.
Alex Newman has announced his candidacy for Edmonds City Council, Position 3.
“I’m running because Edmonds deserves forward-thinking leadership that prioritizes safety, education, and our environment,” said Newman, who in a news release described himself as an experienced humanitarian executive and emergency management leader.
“As someone with real-world experience responding to crises, I understand what it takes to build strong systems before they’re needed – and how to bring people together when it matters most.”
